This is the oatmeal cookie mom always made for us. I've tried a few other recipies, but this is the winner so far. It comes from the old Better Homes and Garden (red and White checked book). It will stay on the blog until I find a better one.
Makes about 60 cookies
1 c. shortening (or butter)
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. buttermilk or sour milk ( 1 c. milk and 1 tsp. white vinegar)
1 3/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp.nutmeg
3 c. quick oatmeal (I use reg. oats)
1 c. raisins (I use choc. chips)
Cream shortening or butter, sugar, and eggs together till light and fluffy. Stir in buttermilk. Sift together dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, raisins and nuts. Drop from Tblsp. 2 inches apart. Bake in hot oven (400) about 8 minutes.
