German Chocolate Carmel Bars

These came from Uncle Darrell

1 German chocolate cake mix
14 oz. Package caramels
¾ cup melted butter
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 cup chocolate chips
nuts (optional)

Heat the carmels with 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk; stir and set aside. Stir mix, the other 1/3 cup evaporated milk, butter and nuts. (Batter will be thick). Spread ½ into a 9x13 inch greased pan and bake 350 degrees for 6 minutes. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips and spoon the caramel mixture evenly over the top. Spread the remaining batter over the top of the caramel and bake for another 15 – 18 minutes.
